In the Budget for 2004-2005,
the Indian Government has imposed an Education Cess
of 2% on all taxes including customs duty (excluding
WTO bound rate items). As a result, the customs duty
on import of pulses was increased from 10% to 10.2%.
However, through Notification No.69/2004-Customs dated
9th July 2004, Government has waived this Cess on Peas
(H.S. # 0713.10.00).
Note: The Government
has issued a Notification No.57/2006-Customs dated June
8, 2006 therby exempting import of pulses from the whole
of customs duty in order to keep prices in the domestic
market under control. Peas and Pulses can now be imported
into India up to 31 March 2007 at Nil import duty."
